Cory Mill is a site of a former Mill in a rural location by River Torridge, nr village of West Putford. The site area is 6 ha and it includes the stretch of the river.
The property is a detached 2 storey cottage – a former miller’s house. It is believed that the cottage dates back to circa 1820 and was adjacent to a mill building, which has been demolished. The house’s appearance sadly had been altered in 1970s – when two, rather unattractive splayed window bays had been added and the first floor window openings enlarged.
Currently Cory Mill cottage is a cramped and not very functional house and its owners have to face issues arising from its age and location.
The original brief was to extend the house as well as refurbish and that what was approved at the planning stage. However due to the budget limitations we concentrated on the internal works to the house. The cottage was thoroughly transformed into a functional home and its features enhanced to re-inject the character and beauty. The flat ceiling at the first floor level was removed and the loft space partially incorporated into the bedrooms. The relocation of the stairs allowed a more open plan feel to both floors and a better light circulation. The refurbishment works are still in progress.
